Pelvic organ prolapse

On vaginal examination, prolapse is present in up to 50% of women. Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when one or more pelvic organs (such as the bladder, urethra, uterus, vaginal vault, lower intestine, or rectum) shift downward into the vaginal wall due to weakened pelvic floor muscles and connective tissues.

Symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse

Common symptoms include a bulging or dragging sensation in the vagina, pelvic pressure or heaviness, difficulty or incomplete emptying of the bladder or bowels, urinary leakage, faecal staining and discomfort during sex. Some women may notice a visible bulge at the vaginal opening. Risk factors include pregnancy and vaginal childbirth, menopause, obesity, chronic straining (e.g. constipation, heavy lifting), chronic cough, family history of prolapse and connective tissue disorders.

Treatments for pelvic organ prolapse

At Lift and Revive, management of pelvic organ prolapse begins with a physiotherapy-led approach designed to restore pelvic floor function, improve support, and help you feel confident in daily life.

Pelvic health physiotherapy focuses on assessing and retraining the pelvic floor muscles to improve strength, coordination, and endurance, as well as teaching strategies to reduce pressure on the pelvic organs. Manual therapy and education may be used to release overactivity, and support healthy movement and breathing patterns. Lifestyle advice is also an important part of care, helping to maintain bowel health, reduce strain, and promote long-term pelvic wellbeing.

We also offer advanced, non-surgical therapies that complement physiotherapy, including:

  • Emsella chair, which enhances pelvic floor muscle strength through electromagnetic stimulation.

  • FormaV and Morpheus8V, which support connective tissue tone, elasticity, and circulation.

While these advanced treatments are not designed as medical interventions for prolapse, some women may notice improved comfort and support when pelvic floor strength and tissue health are optimised.

Your care plan is always tailored to your individual goals, providing a safe, supportive path toward greater pelvic health, comfort, and confidence.
